How Your RFC Assessment Affects Disability Benefits

An assessment of the most an individual can do in a work setting despite their physical or mental limitations from medical conditions.

Understanding Residual Functional Capacity (RFC)

RFC evaluates abilities like sitting, standing, walking, lifting, concentrating, and interacting with others. It's used at steps 4 and 5 of the disability evaluation to determine if the claimant can perform past work or any other work existing in the national economy.

Examples

  • 1RFC limiting individual to sedentary work
  • 2Mental RFC showing moderate concentration limitations
  • 3RFC assessment supporting inability to work
