What is Disability Determination?

The process by which Social Security evaluates whether an applicant meets the legal definition of disability and qualifies for SSDI or SSI benefits.

Understanding Disability Determination

SSA uses a five-step sequential evaluation: 1) Are you working? 2) Is your condition severe? 3) Does it meet a listed impairment? 4) Can you do past work? 5) Can you do any other work? Most claims are initially denied and require appeal.

Examples

  • 1Initial application reviewed by state DDS agency
  • 2Denied claim appealed to Administrative Law Judge
  • 3Consultative examination ordered by SSA
