What is Bedsore?
A pressure ulcer or wound that develops on the skin and underlying tissue due to prolonged pressure, typically from lying or sitting in one position without adequate repositioning.
Understanding Bedsore
Bedsores, medically known as pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers, are classified in stages from I (mild redness) to IV (deep tissue damage reaching bone). They are largely preventable with proper care including regular repositioning, adequate nutrition, and skin monitoring. The development of advanced-stage bedsores in a care facility is often considered evidence of neglect and can form the basis of a personal injury or wrongful death claim.
Examples
- 1Stage IV pressure ulcer developing on nursing home resident's sacrum
- 2Bedsores caused by facility's failure to reposition immobile patient every two hours
- 3Infection from untreated bedsore leading to sepsis and hospitalization
