The best case updates are long enough to inform but short enough to read. Here's how to find the right balance.
General Guidelines
- Aim for 3-5 sentences for routine updates
- Use bullets for multiple items
- Put the most important info first
- End with clear next steps
Update Types by Length
Quick Update (1-2 sentences)
For simple status changes: "Your medical records arrived today. I'm reviewing them and will be in touch with next steps."
Standard Update (3-5 sentences)
For typical milestones: Include what happened, why it matters, and next steps.
Detailed Update (multiple paragraphs)
For settlement offers, major developments, or complex situations requiring explanation.
Formatting for Readability
- Use short paragraphs
- Add bullet points for lists
- Bold key information
- Include headers for longer updates
The "So What" Test
For every sentence, ask: "Does this help my client understand their case or what they need to do?" If not, cut it.
Sample Lengths
Too short: "Case progressing."
Too long: [Five paragraphs of legal procedure]
Just right: "Your demand letter was sent today. We're asking for $X based on your medical expenses and pain/suffering. The insurance company typically responds within 30 days. I'll contact you immediately when we hear back."
